Rust Console beginner tips: getting started on Haven 2x (PS5 and Xbox)
Rust on PlayStation and Xbox is the same brutal survival game as on PC, played with a controller and a few console-specific differences. If you are starting out on Haven 2x, our console server, this guide gives you the practical habits that keep new players alive, plus what is different about our settings.
Getting on the server
Console Rust does not let you type a server address. Open Rust, choose Play, open the Community tab and search for Haven 2x. Add it to your favourites once you are in, so you can find it straight away after the next wipe.
The server runs crossplay between PS5 and Xbox, so you can team up with friends on either console. It holds 100 players on a 4500 map hosted in London.
What is different on Haven 2x
Our console settings are designed to cut the slow, grindy parts of the early game:
- 2x gather, loot and stacks. Nodes, barrels and crates give twice as much, and stacks hold twice as much.
- Tier 1 blueprints. You can craft the basics from the first hour instead of researching them one at a time.
- Instant recycling. Recyclers finish straight away, and there are extra ones on the map, including one on Cargo Ship.
- Fast nights. You spend most of your time playing in daylight.
- Bradley events for groups who want a bigger fight.
- Quads maximum, no allies. If you fight, farm or raid with another group, you count as one group.
- Wipes every other Thursday. Wipe pings go out in the RUST CONSOLE section of our Discord.
Set up your controls before you need them
The worst time to discover your settings is in your first gunfight.
- Adjust your look sensitivity in the settings menu until you can turn quickly and still make small aiming adjustments. Most players start too high.
- Learn the radial menus. Building, crafting and emotes all sit behind wheel menus. Practise picking items from them on the beach, where it is safe.
- Find the crafting queue. Get used to queueing several items and walking off while they craft.
- Check your audio. Footsteps and gunshots tell you more than anything else in Rust. A headset helps a lot.
Your first 30 minutes
- Hit nodes and trees with your rock for stone and wood, and pick up the hemp plants you pass for cloth.
- Craft a stone hatchet and pickaxe as soon as you can. They gather far faster than the rock.
- Make a sleeping bag and place it somewhere hidden. Dying with nowhere to respawn means a long walk.
- Pick a quiet build spot away from the big monuments and main roads, which are busiest on wipe day.
- Build a small base and put a Tool Cupboard down immediately. Without one, anyone can build around you and your base will decay.
- Upgrade to stone before you log off. With 2x gather, stone comes in quickly.
Our Rust base building basics guide explains the TC, upkeep, airlocks and honeycombing in more detail. The mechanics are the same on console.
Making the most of tier 1 blueprints
Because the tier 1 basics are already unlocked, you can skip much of the early research and move straight to getting a workbench and components.
- Farm barrels and crates along roads for scrap and components.
- Recycle everything you do not need. With instant recycling, a trip to a recycler is quick. Spare components turn into the metal, scrap and high-quality metal you need for better gear.
- Spend scrap on what matters. Save it for the workbench and the blueprints that move you forward, rather than items you can already craft.
- Split research with your team so you are not all buying the same unlocks.
Staying alive
- Do not roam with everything you own. Take what you need for the trip and leave the rest at home.
- Spread your loot across several boxes and keep your best items in the middle of the base.
- Check before you open your door. Have a quick look around, and build an airlock as soon as you can so the outside door is closed before the inside one opens.
- Watch out at monuments. They are where the loot is, and where other players are waiting.
- Use the fast nights. Night is short, so use it for crafting, sorting boxes and upgrading rather than risky trips.
Playing in a group
Groups on Haven 2x are capped at four with no allies. The rule is about how you play, not about the team menu, so you cannot share a base with another group or call targets for them. If you need teammates, the RUST CONSOLE section of our Discord is the place to find them.
Good habits for a console group:
- Use party chat so you can talk while you play.
- Give everyone a job: one farming, one building, one roaming, one watching the base.
- Agree on a door code and keep it within the group.
Discord: wipe pings, kits and the Kaos shop
The RUST CONSOLE section of our Discord is where you get:
- wipe day announcements and server information,
- the Kaos shop and account linking,
- help from staff and other players.
Pick Rust Console when you join so you see the right channels.
When something goes wrong
If you see a cheater, lose items to a bug, or a kit does not arrive, open a support ticket rather than sending a DM. Include the time, the player's name and a clip or screenshot if you have one. Consoles make capturing clips easy, so use the share button when something happens.
Ready for wipe day?
Check the Rust Console page for server details, read the rules, and join the Discord for the next wipe ping. If you are not sure whether console PvP is for you, our comparison of Rust PvE vs PvP covers all three Haven Rust servers.
